While working at Taihei Sugiyama’s ceramics studio in the Sasayama countryside in 2008 I stayed in an old reformed barn. The mud and bamboo walls probably did more to attract insects than to keep them out. Isolated, no TV and 20 minutes from a small town, I often spent the evenings sketching my roommates.
