Kjell Hahn worked in the spring of 2008 with ceramic artist Taihei Sugiyama (杉山 たいへい)in the village of Sasayama, Hyogo prefecture.

Sasayama is part of the Tamba ceramics area, one of the 6 ancient kiln sites of Japan. However, most of the market for traditional wares has evaporated over the years. The only surviving potters have had to adapt to the changing economy and tastes of the population. Mr. Sugiyama's company, like many others has tried to find a niche market to sell their wares. While somewhat successful the survival of the company was a constant challenge.
