i finally got the two pieces back i fired in chiaki horikoshi’s anagama. im going to mount onihead 1 outside, above the genkan today.  the front of this house needs a lot of work.. kinda looks like a shanty with all these layers of multi-colored corrugated tin covering most of the walls.  maybe this will give the house a little flare.

at the end of october i worked with chiaki horikoshi (堀越千秋), painting and putting up a theater set for a flemenco dance at sougetsu hall in tokyo. there were several people working on it but yuko takamura certainly deserves mention as she did most of the work.
the dancer in the video is michiko takano.

i couldnt get a recording of the music at the performace so i used a recording from a side project of chiaki’s, Los Agujetas En Japón.

went up to sasayama to fire john dix’s anagama kiln last week. great to be back and see everyone. i had the chance to meet a number of artists firing with john this time and wanted to thank dan russo, susan kotulak and jim shea- it was great working with everyone. nothing like firing an anagama to learn what people are made of.

again, the video can be viewed in high quality through youtube.

it rained here for a couple a days so when the weather finally cleared i grabbed by camera and bicycle and headed out. the roads on the mountains have so much cover from the trees around them that it takes forever for the roads to really dry.  a lot of them actually have moss growing on them. when i fell i wasnt going fast, and i’ve had the bike slide out from under me a couple times going over railroad tracks or manhole covers without falling, so i thought i could handle whatever the road threw at me. well, obviously i couldnt.

the video is what it is quality-wise. adobe premiere literally crashed over 20 times while making it.

my uncle, “unk” soundly defeated my 11 month old niece kaylee, in an combined eating and overall cuteness contest the other day. unk said his fork skills gave him upper hand in the end. according to the victor, using the back of the fork he was able to pack all the food into a dense patty, making it much easier to handle separate portions on the plate. kaylee’s wild freestyle approach, which had served her well up to this point, was unable to compete with the meticulous veteran. half-way though the competition she simply lost consciousness.
congratulations unk. we are all very proud of you.

well, things are moving along studio-wise.  no more running around for a little while so I can focus on my work.  next week im going to the other side of the country to help fire John Dix’s kiln and to meet with an Osaka gallery owner. after that i have to find a job. boo hoo.

in the meantime im working on the house for a few hours a day and drawing the rest of the time. im really satisfied with these non-specific organic clump works I’ve been making recently.  the media isnt giving me problems like I had in the Nagoya crowd series.   the shapes in the drawings take on a life of their own, with the same kind of dynamic interactions as the Oni Landscape series but without feeling as automated as that series had.  i’ve done a couple on wood paneling and MDF but most of the ones I like best have been on paper.  im aiming to get a couple of the larger pieces in a finished state, and hopefully documented before I leave town.
